The bottled mineral water sector is accelerating transformation of the circular economy, driven by growing environmental awareness and the need to reduce negative impacts on the environment. Many water bottling companies, such as Importaco Waters, are implementing innovative strategies to enhance sustainability throughout our production chain, from responsible management of raw material resources to recycling packaging.
One of the main focuses of this change is to reduce the use of conventional plastics and incorporate recycled materials into packaging. For us at Importaco Waters, the new waste law has been “a catalyst for driving positive changes in our business towards greater environmental sustainability”. In fact, we are working to reduce the weight of packaging to minimize our environmental footprint and to develop packaging materials such as rPET and other recycled plastics.
All these actions not only reduce the industry’s environmental footprint, but also respond to the demands of consumers who are increasingly concerned about sustainability, as stated in the 2024 Report on the Bottled Water Sector in Spain (in Spanish), by Alimarket.
Implementing the circular economy in the mineral water sector also involves a comprehensive approach to waste management and promoting recycling. The Alimarket report explains that bottled water companies are working in collaboration with government agencies and environmental organizations to promote the correct separation and collection of packaging, in order to increase recycling rates and reduce the generation of plastic waste.
A major investment for new mineral water bottling processes
Importaco Waters has earmarked a budget of nearly six million euros for 2024 to implement new packaging processes and increase our productivity. Our long-term investment plan is designed to improve operational efficiency, advance the development of springs and explore new business opportunities in the marketplace.
Another key strategy in this transformation to boost the circular economy is the sector’s commitment to green energy and the reduction of the carbon footprint in the production and distribution of mineral water. According to the report, adopting sustainable practices, such as the use of renewable energies and the optimization of logistics, helps reduce the industry’s environmental impact and promote a more responsible business model.
The actions we are taking at Importaco Waters and that are also being implemented by other companies in the sector not only respond to market demands and environmental regulations, but also reflect our commitment to preserving the environment and promoting a sustainable and responsible business model.
